JUSTIFICATION OF THE INSCRIPTION

“Jurjevo koledovanje”, as they know it in Sevnica, is one of the more recognisable carol singing customs in Slovenia. While in many other places, the customs associated with the celebration of this holiday have turned into tourist events, the singing of St George’s carols calendars in Sevnica takes place in its original time and in the local environment, and is intended to be enjoyed by the local population. Despite occasional interruptions, the singing of St George’s carols in Sevnica continues the tradition of our ancestors. They are an important element of local identity for residents, and one of the elements contributing to the connection of various local communities.

INTANGIBLE CULTURAL HERITAGE
According to the UNESCO Convention for the Protection of Intangible Cultural Heritage, intangible cultural heritage “means the practices, representations, expressions, knowledge, skills – as well as the instruments, objects, artefacts and cultural spaces associated therewith – that communities, groups and, in some cases, individuals recognize as part of their cultural heritage. This intangible cultural heritage, transmitted from generation to generation, is constantly recreated by communities and groups in response to their environment, their interaction with nature and their history, and provides them with a sense of identity and continuity, thus promoting respect for cultural diversity and human creativity.
