The old town of Sevnica

Feel the pulse of the former centre of the town and its old walls.

The old town of Sevnica

The old town of Sevnica is nestled between the castle hill and the Sava River. The main square retained its medieval character and its semicircular shape, opened towards the river, which was once an important hub for trade and traffic alike.

Along the way, you will encounter some prominent historical landmarks: the Gothic church of St. Florian from 1443, the Neo-Romanesque church of St. Nicholas from 1862, and the famous Martin’s Plague Column, which testifies to community values and cultural discovery over the centuries. You can also visit the Kreutz barbershop and hairdresser salon, or explore the Railway Museum with model railways right by the railroad.

Take a walk past the Lower Castle, with the year 1609 carved into the portal: the building that currently houses the municipal administration will take you through the time when the square was the main source for the rhythm of life in the town. Preserved buildings with details on the walls and row house architecture create a sense of the centuries past.

The old town is not only a monument to the past, but a lively place for socialising – it is perfect for families, cyclists, and hikers who appreciate cultural heritage without crowds, while moving along in the relaxed rhythm of the day.

Becoming a godparent to Blaufränkisch vines in the castle vineyard

Become a part of the ever-evolving story of wine.

Since 2007, the 500 Blaufränkisch vines growing on the sunny terraces under the walls of the castle are being cultivated by local winegrowers once more. By becoming a godparent to one of those vines, this is your chance to also become a part of this story: your name will be written on a plaque next to the vine, and you will be invited to the traditional pruning of vines and the autumn harvest to commemorate the important moments of the wine-growing year together with other godparents. These events are an excellent opportunity to enjoy some local delicacies, taste delicious castle wine, and spend some pleasant time together in the castle park. Godparents also receive a bottle of wine from the castle vineyard, made from grapes that you helped grow.

During the tasting, you will find out more about the different styles of the Blaufränkisch, from fresh to ripe variants, and learn more about the history and peculiarities of this variety. Enjoy the wine in the company of some local delicacies, such as Sevnica salami, local cheeses, and bread.

Animated tours for children

Life of the lords of the manor through the eyes of a child.

Experience a magical castle adventure in the form of an animated tour at Sevnica Castle. Designed for preschool and elementary school groups, the program takes children back to the 17th century, where they will find out more about the life of Baron Moscon and his entourage. Upon arrival, guests are welcomed by the castle administrator who will take them through the Baroque castle salons to the Count’s bedroom, where they must wake up the sleepy Count. In return, he will greet them with stories about his adventures. But the Count also has to dress for the day; while waiting, young visitors can sit in the benches of the authentic old classroom, just like the ones in which their grandparents used to sit, before joining the Count for breakfast in the large dining room, where they will all sing some songs and taste homemade biscuits. The programme will continue with a visit to the castle puppet theater. At the end of the tour, the children will peek into the castle dungeon, thereby completing their unforgettable experience.
