it's a feeling that stays with you.

Sevnica is a destination for boutique experiences, where unspoiled nature meets rich cultural heritage and premium gastronomy.

And it is precisely this integrity that gives Sevnica its character – the town is just big enough, but it is also calm and interesting enough to be remembered.

Sevnica salami

The Sevnica salami is one of the most recognizable culinary symbols of the Posavje region, combining tradition, knowledge, and local raw materials. The salami is made according to old recipes passed down from generation to generation by domestic butchers. Its characteristic shape, balanced taste, and high quality have made it a central part of the annual competition for the best Sevnica salami – "Salamijada", attracting local craftsmen and curious visitors alike

Blaufränkisch

The Blaufränkisch is a trademark of the Sevnica wine-growing hills and one of the most appreciated varieties of red wine of the region of Posavje. In the vineyards along the Sava River, under the slopes of Lisca and the Sevnica Castle, the variety thrives in ideal conditions that give it its characteristic freshness, fruitiness, and elegance. Each drop reflects the rich tradition of viticulture that has been present in this area for centuries. The Blaufränkisch Festival, dedicated to this variety, is a unique wine and culinary event in the spring months that takes place in the beautiful ambience of the castle park at the Sevnica Castle.

Did you know ...

Sevnica is the birthplace of Melania Trump, First Lady of the United States of America. She grew up right here, in the town along the Sava River, where she lived and attended primary school before her life path led her to the world of fashion and, later, to the White House. Today, you can find the Melania cake and other lovely culinary hommages to her name in Sevnica, which you can try only here.

A town with a rich history.
Sevnica has a rich history dating back to prehistorical times. Archaeological sites, such as Ajdovski Gradec above the town, testify to the fact that the area was already settled in late Antiquity and during early Christianity. It is one of the most important historical points in the region, where the preserved remains of sacral and residential architecture from the 5th and 6th centuries serve as clear proof that cultural and religious activity was evolved in this region in early times.

Sevnica was first mentioned in writing in 1275, under the name “Liechtenwalde”. In the 14th century, the town acquired market rights, which stimulated the development of fairs and crafts, as well as economic growth. It was already known back then as an important administrative and commercial centre of the region of Posavje.

In the 16th century, Sevnica was one of the key Protestant centres in Slovenia. The Lutheran Cellar, which served as a prayer room and is today considered an important cultural monument, originates from that era. Protestant influence also left traces in the education, printing, and religious life of the region.

The arrival of the railway – the connection between Vienna, Ljubljana and Zagreb – strongly influenced the development of the town in the 19th century. Sevnica has evolved into a transport and industrial center with workshops, shops, and companies.

In the 20th century, the town managed to keep its identity throughout both wars, changes of state arrangements, and rapid industrialisation. Throughout this period, it remained firmly anchored in the space of the region, with a strong sense of history and belonging.
